Wikipedia:
Tic-tac-toe, also spelled tick tack toe, and alternatively called noughts and crosses, Xs and Os, and many other names, is a pencil-and-paper game for two players, O and X, who take turns marking the spaces in a 3x3 grid, usually X going first.
Players soon discover that best play from both parties leads to a draw. Hence, tic-tac-toe is most often played by young children; when they have discovered an unbeatable strategy they move on to more sophisticated games.
There is a variation on tic-tac-toe that is popular in Vietnam, China, Korea and Japan in which the player has to get 5 in a row to win the game.
Gomoku (Go-moku) is an abstract strategy board game and is also called Five in a Row.
It is traditionally played with go pieces (black and white stones) on a go board (19x19 intersections); however, because once placed, pieces are not moved or removed from the board, gomoku may also be played as a Paper and pencil game.
